OCEAN CITY, MD.- Surfs up!
Kids took to the waves Wednesday afternoon in Ocean City, as they attended a surf event for children with autism.
“They are the rock stars of the day you know what I mean it’s just awesome everybody’s here to see them,” Woody German, a co-coordinator of the event, said.
The nationwide non-profit organization, Surfers Healing, put on the day camp.
One wave at a time, they are setting out to enrich the lives of people living with autism by introducing them to surfing.
“We wish to just have more and more of these types of events and that we can show that people with disabilities can participate in any part of the community,” Carol Beatty, Secretary of Maryland Department of Disabilities, said.
For Eric Devlin, who’s been participating in this event for 5 years, he said he lights up in the water.
“I like being in the water, and I like surfing and being on top of the surfboard,” Eric Devlin said.
And Eric’s dad said seeing his son enjoying himself and all the people supporting means the world.
“Proud of him, I’m so proud of him and I’m proud of what everybody does here, they volunteer for this 32 they really go out of their way for Eric and people like him special,” Neil Devlin, said.
But Eric and his dad aren’t the only ones over the moon about coming to this event.
Adan Ramirez feels the same, he’s been attending for years to support his niece with autism.
“It makes me feel happy that she got out there and got out of her shell and she’s going out into the world,” Ramirez said.
Ramirez adding events like these show others that people with autism are capable of anything.
“It makes me feel like that she has the same amount of energy as everyone else, she can do as much as us so anyone that thinks that she can’t you’re wrong,” Ramirez said.
We are told this is the 11th year that this event has been put on in Ocean City.
Last year, they were not able to have it due to COVID-19.
We are also told that the surf instructors helping the kids come from all over, including Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
