Smithsburg, MD. - Travel down Duel Highway to Beaver Creek Road in Hagerstown and standing tall is a billboard of a drawing of various people with disabilities.
Malaika Thiombiano, 14, an eighth-grader at Smithsburg Middle School, is the artist behind that drawing.
Malaika is the winner of the Tri-State Civitan Disability Awareness annual art contest, which included work submitted by students from each middle school in Washington County Public Schools.
Tri-State Civitan in Hagerstown is an organization that funds medical and dental needs, summer camp, specialized computer equipment, therapeutic horse and music lessons for individuals with disabilities who have been unable to find funding elsewhere, according to its website.
They are a community organization that supports people with developmental disabilities in Washington County.
"My poster has seven people with disabilities," said Malaika, who also won $100 with her drawing. "Some of the disabilities are visible, some you don't see. It's a mix of people.
"It shows that human beings are all the same, and perfectly capable of doing what they want," she said.
Pat Kurtz, with Tri-State Civitan of Hagerstown said Malaika's art work was chosen by a panel of judges. This is the fourth year the organization has held the contest.
Kurtz, who called Malaika's work "fabulous," said it was chosen because it shows Civitan's main focus — highlighting all the wonderful abilities that individuals with disabilities have.
"The judges felt that Malaika's artwork demonstrated that," Kurtz said.
The panel included an art teacher from Barbara Ingram School for the Arts, a special education teacher from Greenbrier Elementary Schools and a Civitan member.
March is also Disability Awareness Month, first declared by President Ronald Reagan on Feb. 26, 1987.
Matthew Hoffman, principal at Smithsburg Middle School, said the school community is extremely proud of Malaika and her artistic ability.
"She is a great student," he said. "She is outstanding. I wish I had 500 (students) of her here … I have nothing but great things to say about her."
Malaika just wants to show others what middle schoolers are capable of doing.
"I want people to see what middle schoolers can do," she said. "I want to inspire others that think of middle schoolers with not a lot of community experience. I want to show what we can do."
Malaika used pencils and markers to draw her art piece on poster board.
"I'm planning on having a career in the art world," she said. "My art work speaks for me. I can put my ideas on paper."
For the meantime, Malaika is excited to have her art work chosen to be displayed for all to see.
"Well I feel most excited," she said. "Doing something so big was unexpected. I feel really grateful."
Malaika is the daughter of Leticia and Jeremiah Thiombiano of Hagerstown.
