New Hopkins Dashboard Tracking When/Where Those with Disabilities Can Get Vaccinated

BALTIMORE (WBFF) - There's a new Johns Hopkins dashboard helping people across the country who have disabilities determine when they qualify for the COVID vaccine.
Researchers say this will not only help with providing life-saving information, it's also shining a light on vaccine equity and how those with disabilities are being impacted.
When people with disabilities can get the COVID vaccine varies by state.
A Hopkins student came up with the idea to create the dashboard after realizing she didn’t qualify yet in Maryland, but would in other states.
"As we started digging in and scraping the state data and populating our dashboard, we realized from our knowledge and expertise in this area that not all of that information on the different states' websites is actually accessible," says Bonnielin Swenor, director of the Johns Hopkins Disability Health Research Center. "We are looking at four separate groups in our dashboard."
Those in long term and congregate care homes, people with chronic conditions as well as other disabilities.
"We're talking about people with physical disabilities, sensory disabilities. I actually have a vision impairment. I have a visual disability myself.
People with cognitive disabilities, intellectual, developmental disabilities."
The data is updated each Wednesday.
This helps people find vaccines, but it also shows where the community is prioritized and why.
Swenor says equity needs to be part of this conversation because those with disabilities can be at greater risk.
"You have no idea if you have profound vision loss if those around you are wearing a mask right? If you’re doing all the right things and protecting yourself, we know it’s not just about what you’re doing, but what those around you are doing. That’s an inequity in the impact," she says.
She’s hopeful this dashboard will improve the healthcare system in the future saying this model could help by impacting health care policy and decision-making.
