DELMARVA- “That’s something that I was looking for and couldn’t find. I just thought that I could create something like that for others,” Walker said.
Meet Shawnee Walker. She’s an eastern shore native, mother, and author looking to change the world’s view on epilepsy through her Milo Book Series.
It’s inspired by her son Kaden’s personal experience who was diagnosed with the disorder at the age of one. “My first book started discussing epilepsy, how to teach children what it is and what to do if someone has a seizure, and how not to be afraid. Also, just to treat everyone the same although they may be a little different,” Walker said.
People living with epilepsy have abnormal brain cell activity which causes seizures.
Walker says the most challenging part of the journey has been the fear of the unknown. “Not knowing if he would grow out of it and not knowing if it would happen again,” Walker said.
“He recently went a year and a half without a seizure and then he ended up having one a few months ago. He actually had two.”
That’s why Walker tells us she put pen to paper. She’s now seen overwhelming support from the local community, hosting several school readings and partnering with libraries to spread the magic of Milo. ” I just took that time to teach myself about epilepsy, seizures, what to do, and just learn a little more to help him,” Walker said.
Outside of his disability, 11-year-old Kaden is just your average kid who loves to play piano and has a heart of gold. He’s the reason Walker says she’ll never stop fighting. “Seeing him like that and being happy on his regular days is what pretty much keeps me going,”
Walker encourages parents who have children with special needs to continue educating themselves on their disabilities and to advocate for them.
