There’s no better reminder that summer has arrived than Memorial Day. That was Monday. And now Friday means that JC Fridays is returns on June 4 with, for the first time in a year, in-person events. JC Fridays is a free arts festival across Jersey City, presented by Art House Productions and held four times a year at the start of every season. This year’s festival will also celebrate artists with disabilities.
The Festival celebrates the art community of Jersey City. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, JC Fridays was forced to adapt to virtual programming, and while restrictions are being lifted, JC Fridays will still have virtual programming Friday, but some events during the day can be seen in person.
In-person events include the following:
Ed&Mary’s presents CHOPPED Art Edition at 4 p.m., an outdoor event where four contestants will try their hand at art on the fly. The event has been billed as “like watching the cooking show ‘Chopped’” but instead of surprise food baskets, contestants will get baskets of random art supplies and have 20 minutes to let the creativity flow. The winner will get $100 cash and get to show their work on Art House Productions JC FRIDAYS zoom collaboration. Ed&Mary’s is located at 174 Coles St., corner of 9th St. and Coles St., Jersey City.
Dvora Gallery presents Jocelyn Fine Paintings/Rainbow Thursdays Artists from 6 to 8 p.m. Drawing Rooms’ Rainbow Thursdays Artists program, which started in 2012, is for adults with developmental disabilities. JC Fridays will have a survey of their paintings, drawings, and sculptures. Dvora will also have its opening weekend for Jocelyn Fine’s Balancing Act on Friday, June 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, June 5, from 3 to 7 p.m. Masks are required and the gallery is open to five visitors at a time.
The Arrival: Expressions of Nohi, can be seen at JC Fridays from 6 to 7 p.m. The gallery at Hamilton Square Condominiums Lobby, 232 Pavonia Ave., Jersey City, is open to the public to visit seven days a week during the hours of 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Masks and social distancing are required.
Project Greenville’s Lemonade, a group exhibit, is using art, photography, music, and demonstrations to explore how struggles and worries can bring about new skills, hobbies, appreciations, interests, coping mechanisms, strengths, and relationships. Social distancing and masks are required. The event will also have some lemony refreshments for in-person guests on Friday, June 4 and Saturday, June 5 from 4 to 7 p.m. Project Greenville is located at 128 Winfield Ave., Jersey City.
The five person exhibition Art Attack at the Now Project Space takes place from 3 to 8 p.m. and features work from the Eileen S. Kaminksy Family Foundation’s winter residency 2021. The ESKFF is an artist residency program for local, national and international mid-career, emerging artists and students. The Foundation and past resident, Vikki Michalios decided to celebrate the creation of what came out of the 2020 Pandemic by organizing an exhibition that highlights each artist that experienced the ESKFF Residency during lock-down. Now Project Space is located at 411 Monmouth St., Jersey City.
Registration is free for online events but necessary to receive the Zoom links. Registration and a full line-up of events for JC Fridays can be found at jcfridays.com/lineup.
