BEL AIR, MD — To kick off an app-based scavenger hunt and fundraiser, an Orioles Hall of Famer will be in Bel Air Saturday along with a giant tour bus.
The bus will be parked at Black Eyed Suzie's from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Baltimore Orioles Hall of Famer BJ Surhoff and his wife Polly, the co-founders of Pathfinders for Autism, will be on hand, along with staff members who work for the nonprofit.
Pathfinders for Autism, [01] established in 2000, provides advocacy and services for people with autism. In 2014, the organization helped ensure autism treatment would be covered by health insurance plans sold in Maryland. Also that year, the nonprofit became the primary provider of training for police officers on intellectual and developmental disabilities. In 2018, Pathfinders for Autism was awarded the Governor of Maryland's Citation for its first responder training program.
All of its programs are free of charge in Maryland, where 1.9 percent of children have autism, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"For the last 21 years, we have been proud to serve the autism community in Maryland by linking families and individuals to needed services, education and support at no cost to them," BJ Surhoff said in a statement. "We hope to raise the funds needed to expand these programs to all regions of Maryland and make an event greater impact."
To raise money for the organization and expand its reach to families around the state, Pathfinders for Autism is launching a campaign to raise $1 million.
The Pathfinders for Autism 2021 Dip Challenge [02] challenges people to "dip" into their hearts, pockets, wallets and sofas to add to the "dip jar" of funds for the organization, making its services available to more people.
A colorful tour bus, wrapped in graphics featuring puzzle pieces — a symbol that reflects the complexity of autism — will make stops around the state from May to October to promote the Pathfinders for Autism 2021 Dip Challenge. Visits are planned in Bel Air, Annapolis, Hagerstown, Hollywood, Rockville, Baltimore and Ocean City.
At the event in Bel Air Saturday featuring the tour bus, officials say they will have DipJars [03] — devices that enable cashless donations — on hand.
People can also donate by paying $10 to play the Great Puzzle Pursuit Scavenger Hunt. [04] Bel Air-based Compass Home Group is hosting the scavenger hunt, which people play using an app. Called GooseChase, the app is available from the Google Play [05] or the App Store. [06]
It costs $10 to participate in the scavenger hunt, which includes more than 100 missions around Harford County, from home-based tasks to those involving destinations.
The game opened online at 5 p.m. Friday and runs through 8 p.m. Sunday, May 23.
As of Friday night, hundreds of people had already signed up, according to Pathfinders for Autism Director of Development Katie Ramirez.
"There are 55 teams registered with over 250 participants total," Ramirez told Patch. "So far, we have raised $150,000 toward the $1 million goal, and this is only stop #1! "
Bel Air was selected as the kickoff for the bus tour because of "the strong community and commitment to our mission," Ramirez said. "This includes our relationship with several business owners, especially Compass Home Group, the hosts of the Scavenger Hunt."
The Pathfinders for Autism tour bus will be in Bel Air from 11 a.m to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 22. Find it at the Black Eyed Suzie's parking lot, 119 S Main Street, Bel Air, MD 21014.
