ELDERSBURG, MD. — Thursday marked the first day when Maryland could make appointments for COVID-19 vaccines at 18 CVS Pharmacy locations across the state.
The first shots will be administered Friday in what CVS representatives said is part of an initial 11-state rollout.
All of Friday's appointments were booked just as soon as appointments were made available.
The effort, so far, is a limited rollout for CVS. As more vaccine becomes available, CVS hopes to administer millions of shots a month nationwide.
Dr. Alexandra Ashworth, a CVS Pharmacy manager in the greater Baltimore area, told 11 News everything is in place to start giving out COVID-19 shots at select Maryland locations.
"It's set up to be pretty seamless," Ashworth said. "We have set up special areas for these vaccines so that normal workflow in the pharmacy is not affected."
People who qualify can make appointments online,
[01] which is recommended, or by phone at 800-746-7287.
The qualifications are a little different as CVS is required to follow specific rules designated by the state, so only people over 65, K-12 teachers and staff, child-care and higher education workers and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities can get a shot.
The 18 CVS pharmacies in Maryland are spread out from Ocean City to the mountains.
"I do believe that more vaccines that we have, the more pharmacies we have being able to immunize that will help increase immunity in the population. Herd immunity is a huge thing," Ashworth said.
CVS will get its vaccine supply straight from the federal government. Maryland is expected to get around 11,000 doses a week with that number increasing in the coming months, as well as locations. Shots will be available seven days a week.
"We will be vaccinating every single day," Ashworth said. "We will have multiple immunization hours. We are fully prepared for taking this on and getting this rolling."
While all of the appointments for this week are full, CVS representatives said Marylanders should bookmark their website and keep refreshing it to see whether appointments open up.
ELDERSBURG, MD. —
Friday was the first day that 18 CVS Pharmacy locations around Maryland began administering COVID-19 vaccination shots.
A steady stream of people showed up throughout Friday at that CVS in Eldersburg, which is one of 18 CVS locations statewide offering the COVID-19 vaccine. Staff have been giving out shots since 10 a.m. and will go until 7 p.m.
While getting an appointment has been a challenge because the slots are filling up so fast, those who did get shots said it was a very easy process.
"Everything was smooth," said Paul Walters, who received the vaccine. "I was expecting chaos and there wasn’t any. It was very well organized and they’ve done a very good job with what they’re doing."
"(I) felt like the CVS process was really easy. (I) signed up, checked in. Simple directions," said Christina Ulrich, a schoolteacher.
Ulrich said it's a sign that normalcy is right around the corner.
"It's just such a relief knowing that, in a few weeks, I could be going back to work with children being in person having a little bit more protection against this terrible disease that's going on right now," Ulrich said.
As far as who can make an appointment to get a COVID-19 vaccine at CVS, it's currently limited to people over 65, K-12 teachers and staff, child-care and higher education workers and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
People who qualify can make appointments online, [01] which is recommended, or by phone at 800-746-7287.
